Fatherhood & New Life
Easter is coming and so is my wife’s due date with our third child! Easter brings so much joy and excitement, but this year for me, it has increased as I also look forward to our son being born. I get to celebrate new life in more than one way – bring on the celebration!
I love my kids and am so excited for the new life of our son, but our heavenly Father loves us so much more.
Even before having kids, I always wanted to be a dad. The days we brought home Elliana and Warren from the hospital are some of my favorite days, despite being tired. I am not the most sentimental person, but with kids I have felt my barriers come down. There is just something about my daughter that can make me start tearing up. How can someone grow up so quickly? Then there’s the joy and humor in my son that just makes me laugh.
As we wait to welcome our new son, Charlie, I am excited to see who he becomes and how God molds him. Yet, as I spend time with my kids and love them, I must remember that God’s love is infinitely more. We serve a God who knows us before we are born and knows us down to the hairs on our head.
Jeremiah 1:5 states, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Matthew 5:30–31 states, “But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
We love and follow a God who is over all, in all things and knows all things – even the most specific details of you and me. How can we not be in awe of God? How can we not be completely pumped and lit up for Easter?
Easter is my favorite holiday!
This may come as a shock, since I work in worship and production ministry, but Easter is my favorite not because of the songs we sing, lighting designs or cool production elements. Easter is my favorite because of who God is and what He has done for you and me. We serve a merciful and loving God and Easter is the biggest reminder of how we have new life in Him. God sent His son to take our punishment of sin. We all know John 3:16, but I love it when you read verse 16 and 17 together. John 3:16–17 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
As a dad, I have a hard time just leaving my kids for a few days. I can’t imagine sending them to die for someone else. We truly have an amazing God! A God who is compassionate and loving. Why aren’t we celebrating more?!
I look at my kids and continue to pray that they know and love the Lord. The day that Elliana came to faith in Christ makes me beam with happiness. I love watching her life in Christ begin. And I can’t wait to see the new life of my son when he is born.
